How to Compare Used Trucks
Comparing used trucks allows a potential buyer to evaluate the performance of the vehicles against one another. The sales price of the used trucks will make a difference in the purchase decision, as will the way the trucks handle during a test drive. Doing some research before a test drive will help the buyer to narrow down the used truck choices.
- Decide which used trucks you want to buy and try to narrow your choices down to two. This will make it easier to negotiate the sales price. Research online for the used trucks and find one or more dealerships that have the vehicles in their existing inventory.
- Compare the price values of the used trucks by using an online vehicle valuation website. Use a search engine to help you find a website. Print out the reports on both vehicles so you can refer to them during the purchase negotiations.
- Test drive the trucks to get an idea of how they perform on the road. Pay attention to the handling of the vehicles and how the engines sound. Inspect the exterior and interior of the trucks to look for damage. Check under the hood of the trucks and look for any abnormalities or wear and tear.
- Have a local mechanic inspect the trucks to get a professional opinion. Find out how much the mechanic charges before you agree to the inspections. Ask the mechanic to put down in writing any concerns about the trucks. This information will be valuable during the purchase negotiations.
- Negotiate the sales price of the trucks. If the trucks are for sale at the same dealership, do not show a preference for one of the trucks or the salesperson may not be willing to lower the price. If the trucks are for sale at two different dealerships, negotiate the price with both dealers and buy the truck with the best price.
