How to Connect Satellite Internet Service to a Computer

There are many rural areas in the United States in which high-speed Internet services are not available. People who live in these areas often seek something better than dial-up Internet services. This can now be found with satellite Internet.

1. Run the cables. There are two coaxial cables coming from your satellite Internet. These should be run to the area in which your computer is located. Make sure you have enough wire to reach where the modem will be sitting.

2. Install the modem. Satellite Internet modems can be a card that goes into the computer or it can be a unit that stands beside it. It needs to be installed onto your computer. If you have an external modem, connect the computer to the modem with an Ethernet cord.

3. Hook up the cable cables. Plug the correct cable in the correct input. Locate the satellite input and output on the modem and place in the appropriate wire.

4. Power the modem. Plug the modem into a power source. A surge protector is recommended for all electronic devices in order to protect them from being struck by lightning.

5. Install the correct or needed software. Some satellite Internet providers require certain programs for their services to work correctly. This is often the case regarding virus protection software. Refer to service provider's guideline to determine exactly what needs to be downloaded to your computer. Some satellite Internet services will not work with certain programs on a computer.
