How to Connect Your Computer to Your Home Stereo

If you want to listen to your music louder than what it plays on your computer's speakers, this would require you to connect your computer to your home stereo. The process does not take long and it is quite easy.

Items Needed

  • Computer

  • 2 Shielded Y-connectors

  • Speakers

  1. Purchase two shielded Y-connectors. One end of the connector should consist of two RCA plugs, while the other side should contain a 3.5 mm mini stereo plug.

  2. Move your stereo close enough to reach your computer. The closer you move the stereo, the better because sound moving through a long length of cords will cause issues with the sound quality.

  3. Make sure your stereo and computer are off.

  4. Hook up the Y-connector to the stereo sound card. The mini plug side will connect into the sound card’s “Line Out.”

  5. Plug in the other side of the Y-connector to the computer’s receiver. The red plug connects into the right side, while the black or white connects into the left.

  6. Connect the other Y-connector. The RCA plugs link to the “Line Output” on the back of the computer. The mini-plugs go into the “Line In” on the back of the sound card.

  7. Turn on your computer via the same method you always do. Turn on your stereo, also.

  8. Select the correct line on the stereo,

  9. Check to make sure you are hearing sound, by slowly increasing the volume.
