How to Connect a Laptop to a Cable Modem
Connecting your laptop to a modem won't be that difficult if you have basic home electronic knowledge, and you most likely already have the right tools. It's just a matter of hooking everything up correctly in the right spot. This project should only take several minutes to complete.
Things You'll Need:
- Modem Software
- Modem User Manual
- USB Cable
- Ethernet Cable
- Computer User Manual
- Turn your computer on without attaching any wires or cables to anything.
- Install the modems software with the CD-Rom it came with. Different modems will have different instructions on the software, but all should be easy to follow. The installation software should have come with your modem in the box it was stored in. It's also a good idea to keep the software just in case you have to re-install the software again.
- Connect the coax cable that is coming from your wall into the modem. There should be a designated spot on the back of the modem where the Internet cable is plugged into. Refer to your modems use manual for specific location if you're having trouble finding it.
- Plug the power cord for the modem into an electrical outlet. Make sure you choose an electrical outlet that doesn't shut off with a switch. You don't want to accidently turn the modems power off by flipping a switch on your wall.
- Attach your modem to your laptop with either a USB cable or Ethernet cable. Refer to your laptops user manual for specific locations of where the USB or Ethernet cable should be plugged into. You should now be able to connect to the Internet.
