How to Connect a Plasma Television to the Internet

Many TV channels that allow you to watch shows through the Internet for free and movie rental companies offer Internet streaming for lesser rates. Fortunately, you can connect your computer to your TV so that you can watch these shows and movies through your TV rather than just on your computer screen. Here are the steps to follow when you want to connect your plasma television to the Internet.

  1. Make sure that your computer is turned off and check the back for the video connections. Most computers have a 15-pin VGA output port. Your computer may also have a S-video port or an RCA video port, and even an HDMI port for high definition. You will also need to determine what types of input your plasma TV has.

  2. Select what type of connection you want to use. HDMI cables will give you the highest quality. Next in quality is VGA, then Component, S-video and then composite. If your computer only accepts one type then the choice will be easy.

  3. Purchase a cable that will be long enough to stretch from your computer’s output port to your plasma TV. Invest in high-quality cables so that your TV receives a good signal and your picture looks good. If you use a cable that is longer than 30 feet, your picture quality may suffer.

  4. Set the computer resolution to one that your TV will accept. You can do this through your Display settings in the Control Panel on your computer. Check your plasma TV manual for the type of resolution you should use.

  5. Connect the cable to your computer and your TV. Also, connect a cable from your computer’s sound output to your TV’s speaker adapters. When you turn on your computer, it should recognize that there is a cable connected. Follow any prompts to complete any additional configuration.
