How to Connect a Propane Tank to a Heater
You can use a propane heater in areas where you need extra heat or have no heat at all. This type of heater uses a propane tank for its fuel. Some heaters have disposable propane tanks, whereas others use tanks that you can refill when they become empty. It only takes a few minutes to connect a propane tank to a heater.
- Read the owner’s manual for your heater before you get started. Make sure the heater is assembled correctly.
- Turn the valve on the propane heater to the “Off” position. You can usually find this valve on the top of the heater. Make sure the valve on the propane tank is also off. The valve on the propane tank is usually placed on the top of it.
- Screw the disposable propane tank to the heater, if your heater uses the disposable tanks. It will normally just easily screw on. If it does not, you will need to connect a hose to the heater. Read the manual to find out exactly how to connect the hose, as it is different for all heaters. Use your hand to tighten the valve, or you can use a wrench, if needed.
- Mix together some soap and water and put it in a bucket. Turn on the valve for the propane tank. Pour the mixture of soap and water onto it and see if you see any leaks. If it is leaking, you will see bubbles. If you do, turn the valve off and tighten it. Keep doing this until you see no bubbles. If you continue to see a leak, you may have to replace a part to fix it.
