How to Connect an RV Trailer Connector

Many people like to pull a trailer or small vehicle behind their RV. Trailers are often used to haul extra supplies and a small vehicle is nice to drive around when vacationing. The trailer is connected by special connector plugs on the back of the RV.

Things You'll Need:

  • Connector Plugs

  1. Purchase connector plugs at an RV store. Different RV's might require different types of plugs; discuss this with a representative at the store. Most RV's however, require both a female and male plug.

  2. Locate the wiring harness on the back of your RV. You might have to run wires to the back of your RV if it wasn't already pre-wired.

  3. Attach all wires to their proper location. The plugs usually have a color coded system to make it easy to identify where each wire goes. The ground wire is usually white and can be attached to a piece of metal on the trailer with a bolt. Make sure you attach each wire to its proper location. There should be wires for: brake lights, taillights, running lights, turn signals and a wire for general power. Try finding a wiring diagram on your RV to use as a reference. You should be able to find the diagram using your owner’s manual.

  4. Repeat the wiring process for the plug on the trailer.

  5. Connect both plugs and turn the RV key to the ON position. Make sure all the lights work, including the brake and turn signal lights.
