How to Connect to PBS Television Stations Without Cable

In recent years, television that is broadcast over the air has started to broadcast in a strictly digital manner. This means that televisions need to be specially equipped in order for people to watch over the air broadcasts. Fortunately, learning how to watch over the air television stations without cable is not that difficult to accomplish.

  1. Decide if you want to watch television in standard definition or in high definition. If you want to watch PBS broadcasts in standard definition, then you will need a digital converter box. If you want to watch PBS broadcasts in high definition, then you will need a high-definition antenna. A digital converter box will typically cost more than a high-definition antenna. If you have a standard-definition television, there is not any need to consider a high-definition antenna.

  2. Connect the digital converter box or the high-definition antenna to the antenna jack located on the back of your television set. The jack should be labeled with the word Antenna located underneath it.

  3. Turn on the television. Go to your television's menu. Allow the television to scan for television stations. Use the Antenna option and not the Cable option. The television will scan for all over the air broadcasts. After the television has finished scanning over the air broadcasts, search for the PBS television station. It will be one of the television stations that were detected broadcasting over the air. If you are having difficulty finding the PBS television station, check your local television guide to find out exactly what station it is.
