How to Conserve Use of the Water Supply in the Home
- Place a two liter plastic bottle filled with small pebbles and water in the tank of your toilet. This will displace the flow of the water and require less water to fill the toilet. This can save you approximately five to ten gallons of water per day.
- Place some food coloring into your toilet tank to check it for leaks. If you notice some color in your toilet bowl that means you have a leak and it should be repaired as soon as possible. This could save you approximately 400 gallons of water per month.
- Turning off the water while you are brushing your teeth or shaving can save you three gallons of water each day.
- Keep bottles of drinking water in the refrigerator. Running tap water and waiting for it to cool is wasteful.
- Take frozen foods out of the freezer well ahead of time to cook them. It will prevent you from having to hold it under running water to defrost.
- Replace the older toilets in your home with newer more conservative models.
- Equip all of your faucets with aerators.
- Wash full loads of clothes in the washer or adjust the water to a lower setting when washing small loads.
