How to Construct a Chain Link Fence

Chain link fences are used very commonly in residential as well as industrial locations. They are usually cost effective when compared with other types of fences, and they can be easily constructed by following a few simple steps. Virtually any adult can construct a chain link fence.

  1. Choose what type of chain link fence will be used in the construction. The most common type of chain link fence used is galvanized and silver colored. They can also be purchased in powder-coated or PVC coated. This is to provide a thicker and sturdier fence. Some people choose aluminum if they live in an environment that is near salt water to avoid the breakdown of the other materials.

  2. Measure the amount of footage that will be required to put up the chain link fence. It is also important to locate the place where the gate will be placed.

  3. Clear this area from any bushes, trees or other debris, so that the fence can be easily constructed in this area.

  4. Drive stakes into the ground with a sledgehammer to mark the place where the fence posts will be placed.

  5. Tie a string along each fence post and create a line across the area where the chain fence will go.

  6. Dig the holes for the fence posts in each location where the stakes are placed. The holes would be at least two feet deep, and ten feet apart from each other to establish continuity.

  7. Install the fence posts, and secure these by pouring pre-mixed concrete in the holes around each fence post. This will keep the fence posts in place. This concrete typically needs 24 hours to dry before completing the project.

  8. Roll the chain link fence wire mesh and connect it to the first post by using the tie and fence pliers. Each fence tie will be hooked about 24 inches apart from the next. Roll the mesh out to the next fence post, and continue attaching the fence mesh with the posts with the ties until the entire fence is up.

  9. Install the gate to the fence using the fittings that came with the gate.
