How to Continue Professional Development Education
Professional development education consists of coursework and classes completed after you receive a professional degree. Many fields are constantly changing, and professionals are required to know about new innovations, ideas and methods. Professional development education is provided by professional organizations and universities.
- Determine what is required for your field. Fields such as medical, social services and education may require a certain number of hours of professional development education.
- Talk to your employer. Employers are often aware that professional employees require continuing education. Many employers enroll their professionals in continuing education programs.
- Join professional organizations. These organizations hold seminars, classes and distance learning courses to provide continuing professional development. Be attentive to mailed reminders because they will list upcoming classes and whether the classes will satisfy any continuing education hours.
- Make an appointment to speak with your academic advisor before graduation. Ask about continuing education coursework that will be required for your field. Sign up for the program mailing list to receive information about continuing education classes that will be held at your school.
- Check professional organization websites. Even if you are not a member of a professional organization, you can usually attend its continuing education seminars and conferences. Websites will have available information including cost, location and date.
- Keep proof of your coursework. Employers and professional organizations require proof of completed continuing education hours. Make sure you sign into the course each day to prove attendance. At the end of the course, obtain a certificate, which can be provided as proof the continuing education course was completed.
