How to Control a Dog With Separation Anxiety

How to Control a Dog While Grooming

Grooming can be intimidating depending on the demeanor of the dog. They can be aggressive, whine, yelp or shiver when bothered. A well-behaved and controlled dog is ideal during the grooming process. Use these techniques to control your dog while grooming

  1. Find a grooming table with a grooming arm. The grooming arm is necessary when controlling the dog and when doing the grooming alone. It will hold the dog in place and keep him from falling.

  2. Use a muzzle to protect against nipping. If your dog likes to bite, then you want to use a Velcro muzzle to calm down your pet. It will protect against any biting.

  3. Groom your dog without anyone in the room. Animals can become agitated and intimidated when several people are involved in the grooming process. You want to keep the atmosphere familiar and calm for your dog.

  4. Reward your pet for excellent behavior. If the dog starts to relax and stops yelping while being groomed, then you should reward him with his favorite dog treat. You want to also praise his behavior when he sits quietly for the grooming. Rewarding the dog will lead to better behavior.

  5. Address the bad behavior. Pet owners have to address the issue when a dog is misbehaving. If he gets out of control, then you want to put him in a crate to calm down. After he is relaxed, you can continue to groom him. He has to understand that bad behavior will not stop the grooming.

  6. Take the grooming process slow. You can’t expect a dog that needs controlling to go through a full grooming for the first time without any difficulty. Start with trimming his nails for five minutes. As time progress, you want to add more time and more to the grooming session. Take small steps to lead up to washing, brushing his hair, trimming and brushing the teeth.
