How to Deal With Your Dog's Aggressive Behavior

How to Correct Aggressive Behavior in Dogs

There are many different types of canine aggressive behavior ranging from dominant aggression to fear aggression.  Regardless of the source of your dog’s hostile behavior, dealing with it can be very frustrating if you aren’t sure how to handle it.  You can correct your dog’s aggressive behavior by asserting your dominance, taking him to the veterinarian for a checkup or hiring a professional trainer.

  • Reestablish your dominance.  Dogs are very smart, and they will manipulate you if you let them.  You have to show your dog that you are the boss, and you will not be controlled by his aggressive behavior.  When you respond to aggression, the dog learns that he can manipulate you through this type of behavior.   In addition to ignoring his behavior, set a rigid feeding and walking schedule.  It’s a good way to make the dog understand that you are in control of his entire life.  Keep in mind that this method can only be use if you are positive your dog will not physically attack you.  If you think there is a chance your dog will attack, you need to hire a professional obedience trainer immediately.

  • Take your dog to the veterinarian.  Canine aggression can be a sign that something is physically wrong.  Dogs that are in pain or suffering from a disease can’t tell you what’s going on out loud, so they lash out in frustration.  Some physical problems that can be a source of canine aggression include low blood sugar, tumors, encephalitis and liver disease.

  • Hire a professional obedience trainer.  If your dog’s aggressive behavior continuous despite your attempts to correct it or if he is a danger to you and others, it’s time to hire a professional trainer.  Professional obedience trainers can identify the source of your dog’s aggression, and use expert training techniques to correct it.
