How to Cover Energy Efficient Windows
Energy efficient windows can be made to be even more cost-effective by adding window treatments and other accessories to maintain the optimal temperature. Draperies, blinds and shades are a couple of options that cut down on the cost of reducing heat loss in the winter and minimizing heat gain in the hotter summer and fall months.
- Add window film to the windows to help reflect additional sunlight and UV rays during the hotter months of the year. The window film will keep the house from heating up on the inside when the temperature is overbearing outside of the house. Cut the film to the size of the window pane. Gently and carefully apply the window film to the window pane using a squeegee. The film is easily removed by simply peeling it off of the window treatment during the winter months to allow sunlight to come through the window and naturally heat up the home.
- Adjust the slats on window blinds. The slats need to be adjusted so that they reflect the light out of the home during the hotter periods and when it is cold adjust the slats so that they allow heat in the house during the colder periods of the year. Heat gain can be lowered by up to 60% when having the blinds completely closed to reflect sunlight away from the house.
- Add quilted roller shades to the window. Quilted roller shades provide numerous layers that offer the ability of insulation and help to decrease the drafts of air that come through the crack around the window.
- Install thermal window coverings to the window panes. Window coverings are a thicker form of curtains that provide increased insulation for the home and help to diminish drafts in the home also. Most window coverings have a reflective fabric on the opposite side facing the outside to that it reflects the sunlight preventing the heating up of the home.
