How to Cover a French Door
Coming up with the ideal French door cover requires considering issues such as the function of the cover, as well as the appearance from the outside and the inside. Using a simple approach, you can design a treatment or cover that is easy to maintain, practical and requires little effort to install.
Finding the right way to dress and cover a French door can be a challenge. The task requires considering the general décor of the space, practical aspects in terms of allowing light through the doors at certain times while blocking light at others, and making sure the covering chosen is visually appealing. One of the more common options is to prepare a set of shades and panels for each of the two doors, making it easy to adjust lighting and privacy needs when and as necessary.
Things You Need:
- Measuring tape
- Level
- Two roll-up shades and hardware
- Four curtain rods and hardware
- Screwdriver
- Curtain panels
1. Measure the length and width of glass section of each of the French doors. This will provide you with the information necessary to properly size the shades and panels, as well as decide where to mount the top and bottom curtain rods on each of the doors.
2. Select the shades. Depending on the décor, a simple ecru or off white roll-up shade will work well. Keep in mind that since this will reside behind a curtain panel, it can be more practical than decorative. The idea is to be able to create a uniform look from the outside, while also not using a color or pattern on the shades that would clash with the interior décor.
3. Turn your attention to the curtain panels. Go with panels that pick up the colors and textures in your room. Plain or brocaded sheers may work well, but other textures and colors will also be a good option. Make sure the panels are the right length and width for each door, and are hemmed to include sleeves for both the curtain rods used on each door.
4. Secure the shades into position, using the hardware provided with the shades. Follow the instructions included with the shades. Before securing in place, use the level to make sure the mounting brackets are level.
5. Position the mounts for the curtain rods, following the instructions that come with the rods. Install the top rod first, and then measure to make sure you know exactly where to place the mounts for the bottom rod. Use the level to make sure the top mounts are even before proceeding to the bottom.
6. Slide the curtain panels onto the rods. Start at the top, securing the rod into position once the panels are placed. Slide the bottom rod through the bottom sleeve or pocket in the panel, and then affix that rod to the bottom mounts. Arrange the panel to best effect, then move on to the next door.
Make sure it is easy to adjust the shade up and down, and that the panels can be opened or closed when desired. Doing so helps the French door treatment to be very flexible, allowing light when you want it and providing privacy when needed.
