How to Create Onesie Baby Dresses
Creating a onesie baby dress is an easy project. You can sew a beautiful dress for a little girl in your life. Creating your own dress allows you to select your own fabrics and adornments, whether you add silk flowers, buttons or little jewels. A onesie baby dress makes a great baby shower gift.
Things You Will Need:
- Sewing machine
- Thread
- Pins
- Baby onesie (in any size)
- 1/3 Yard of dress fabric
- 3-Inch strip of ruffle fabric
- 15-inch length of 1/8-inch wide elastic
- Wash and dry the onesie and fabric in warm water to allow it to shrink to its natural size. Iron out any creases as necessary.
- Measure the width of the onesie directly under the armpits. Mark down this measurement. For our example, we will use 7.5 inches.
- Measure the length of the onesie, beginning at about the same position under the armpits. Write this measurement down as well. For our example, we will use 9.5 inches.
- Multiply the width measurement by 4. This will be the length of fabric that you need to sew the dress. In our example, your length will be 30 inches. Subtract two inches from the length to account for the ruffle. This will be the width of fabric that you need for the dress. For our example, your width will be 7.5 inches. Cut your dress fabric accordingly. For our sample dress, you will cut a rectangle that is 30 inches by 7.5 inches.
- Determine the dimensions of your ruffle fabric. Take the length of your fabric rectangle and multiply it by 1.5. For our sample, you will multiple the length of 30 inches by 1.5 to get a measurement of 45 inches. Per our example, cut a strip of ruffle fabric that is 3 inches wide by 45 inches long.
- Fold, pin and press a half-inch seem allowance on both the ruffle fabric and dress fabric..
- Sew the side seems together on both the dress and ruffle fabrics. Use a ½-inch seem allowance.
- Use pins to gather the ruffle fabric to create a nice, wavy ruffle. Sew the ruffle fabric to the unfinished edge of the dress fabric. Finish the rough edge by sewing a zigzag stitch along the inside.
- Measure your elastic. Multiply your width measurement (7.5 inches per our example) by two. In our sample, you will need a 15-inch length of elastic. Cut the elastic accordingly and sew it to the inside of the fabric, just under your finished edge.
- Pin the dress to the onesie, directly under the armpits. Make sure that you pin the dress in a straight line. Use your sewing machine to sew along the fabric and attach the dress to the onesie.
