How to Create Storage Space in Your Home
Storage space is needed in every home whether it is a large house, a small apartment or something in between. You don't need to increase the size of your living space to create storage. All you need is a few materials and a bit of creativity to have a well organized home.
- Build shelves along your walls. You can have a single self or multiple shelves with space between them for storage. Depending on the room you build the shelves in, you can use the shelves for different items. In the bedroom you can store clothes, dishes in the kitchen, and collectibles in the living area.
- Purchase storage containers at your local store. Flat storage containers can be slide underneath couches, beds, and dressers to hide from view and use less space. Larger storage containers can be stacked in closets, garages, and basements.
- Add cabinets for extra storage space in the bathroom and kitchen. In the bathroom, a cabniet hung above the toilet works great. In the kitchen, added cabinets to existing cabinetry. You can also add a kitchen island with cabinets underneath.
- Build shelves, a storage unit or store items in boxes in the unused space in an attic, garage or basement. Storage containers can be stored in these areas, as well.
- Purchase a storage unit and/or accessories. Build-it-yourself storage units can be bought at most multi-purpose stores. Build one that can be used as a closet or for general storage. Storage accessories can also be bought. These might include a hanging shoe rack, a hat rack, clips to hang coats on and bathroom supply counter shelves.
- Purchase baskets, buckets, chests and barrels that match your home decor. Place these items around your home in attractive areas and fill them with items needed to be stored. Wicker baskets with colorful liners work great in most room while barrels are attractive for outside and gardening use. Chests can be used to store keepsakes and linens and buckets can store cleaning supplies.
