How to Create a Bed With Storage Drawers
Many people would like to create a bed with storage drawers as a space saver. Using the space underneath or around the bottom of the bed can make use of a great deal of space. This can also add an additional function or purpose for a piece of furniture that did not exist before.
- Measure the bed frame of the bed. Usually the mattress will need to be removed to complete this task effectively. These measurements are important to gage how big your storage space for the drawers is. Materials will also need to be purchased so these measurements will help in ordering these materials. The measurement should include a couple of inches for the baseboard, because this will need to be longer than the mattress.
- Take away the bed frame but keep the frame in case you will need it for further measurements at a later time. This should act as the size to gage the amount of storage that will be available under the bed for drawers.
- Get boxes that will be used for drawers. Standard King and Queen sized beds typically work well with three drawers on each side of the bed, so there should be six in total if this is the size bed you are making the storage for. These boxes can be handmade or taken from another source, just so long as they are the same size and they fit.
- Purchase four pieces of wood plank for the sides. Two smaller sizes will be used for the front and back, and two larger sizes will be used for the sides.
- Screw or glue the wood planks together. A piece of plywood can be used for the bottom of the drawers. These can be secured with glue or with screws.
- Make the base of the bed, where the drawers will fit in using wood to create the frame. These pieces of wood can even be the pieces from the old frame put back together to fit the drawers underneath.
- Add tracks to bottom of the floor where the drawers will go under the bed. Rollers will be attached to the drawers to easily slide them in and out. Fill the drawers with clothes when complete.
