How to Create a Layered Rock Garden
A layered rock garden is the perfect way to landscape uneven terrain. To create a layered rock garden you'll need to have a hill or raised mound in a fairly sunny area. Plants thrive in tiered gardens as the rocks and sloped angle of the garden provide for easy drainage.
Things You'll Need:
- Slope or elevated mound
- Rocks
- Shovel or garden trowel
- Plants
1. Choose a slope of land in a partially sunny area. Look at the area to determine how many tiers of rocks your rock garden will consist of.
2. Decide on the size of your rock garden. Outline the area with a garden hose. Use this as a removable border. Follow the shape of the outline when you put the rocks into place.
2. Collect large rocks and stones of various shapes. Use rocks found elsewhere on your property or buy large stones from a nursery or landscaping supply store.
3. Use a garden trowel to prepare and even out the dirt. Each level of the rock garden should have enough room to accommodate plants with a rock border.
4. Arrange the rocks to create a border around each level of the layered rock garden.
5. Dig a space for each rock. The depth you need to dig will depend on the size of the rock. Enough of the rock has to be covered to ensure that it does not slide or move. A third of each rock should be buried.
6. Plant flowers or plants at even spacing throughout each level of the garden.
