It is important to recognize the signs of a violent and abusive individual and seek help. Learn how to create a safety plan to escape an abuser before taking the steps to leave and live a healthier, happier life.
Women all over the world are living with fear and isolation in abusive relationships. The first step to leaving an abusive connection to another is to learn how to create a safety plan to escape an abuser. It is important to plan ahead in order to calmly walk away and be safe when you reach your destination.
- Set aside the items you will need to survive away from your home and abuser. This would include money, medications, maybe your passport or any other important documentations such as a separation agreement or order of protection issued by the police.
- Place these items in a duffle bag or backpack that can easily be grabbed in a hurry or leave them with a trusted friend, relative or neighbor. It is important not to leave the survival bag where your abuser may find its location.
- Create a list. The list should include all phone numbers and contact information of resources, people who can help you and information on your rights as a victim of abuse, assault or battery. Make and keep several lists or memorize the lists if you are afraid to keep them in your purse or the glove compartment of your vehicle.
- Plan your escape route and practice going over it again and again. It is paramount to your safety when in an abusive situation to be able to escape. If calling the police or someone to come and pick you up is not an option, then getting away is the best way.
- Find a safe place to stay. One of the things a victim must do before leaving is to find a safe place to stay upon leaving. There are women's shelters, churches and other places that help women escape abusive men and other types of relationships. You may have to look a little to find them, but they are there.
