How to Create a Workout Plan for Couples

Trying to work out by yourself can be difficult. There is no one to keep you motivated, provide support when you want to quit or keep your mind off of the physical activity that your body is baulking at doing. Couple workouts can be very effective, because the participants get to spend time with their significant other, improving their relationship. Creating a workout plan can help couples stick to their exercise regimens for improved results.

  1. Write out schedules for each participant to identify when they have free time for a workout. Compare the schedules to determine when both have open blocks of time. Try to find time lengths of at least half an hour and preferably not at a time when one of the persons may not be at his or her best (such as right after work or early in the morning for those late risers).

  2. Identify activities that both members like to do. Because the couple will be completing the workout together, it is key that they both like the activity and are able to physically complete it. If there is a large gap in physical fitness ability, consider activities like weights that can be easily adjusted or treadmills where each person can control their own speed.

  3. Make a commitment to each other. This will help the workout plan to be followed through, resulting in better results. Pledging to work out together is different than just intending to work out together.

  4. Provide encouragement during the workout. Couples share a special, intimate bond and know how to provide their spouse with inspiration or support. If a couple workout lacks this, then it is almost pointless to work out as a couple.

  5. Measure results and adjust the workout plan as necessary. As a couple gets in better shape and spends more time together, they may want to up the endurance level or try other types of exercise. This will help keep workouts more exciting and make workouts daily life activities that no longer have to be planned.
