How to Customize Gaming Computer
PC gaming has become a multi-billion dollar industry. With the costs of computers decreasing, it is easy and affordable to buy a powerful gaming computer from most major retail stores. With a few quick customizations, it is easy to increase a computer's performance or give it a unique appearance.
The only tool required for these customizations is a standard Phillips screwdriver. Basic precautions should always be followed to ensure the safety of both you and your hardware.
- Never work on the inner parts of a computer without first unplugging the computer's power supply and discharging any spare power that may be in the capacitors onboard. This can easily be accomplished by powering down the computer, flipping the switch on the power supply to the off position, removing the power cord from the plug on the power supply and pressing the power button on the computer. This will make sure there is no power stored within any of the internal components of the computer.
- Keep any liquids away from your work area. While this may seem like common sense, all it takes is a curious pet, sibling or even stumbling to turn your prized computer into a wet, unresponsive paper weight.
- Be sure to avoid static build-up. Before working on any sensitive computer parts, discharge any static by touching metal object nearby. If your area is prone to static build-up, there are grounding wrist straps you can purchase on many computer websites and retail stores.
- Find a stable, clean space to perform any customizations. Many computer parts are small and computers can be heavy, a proper workspace will help to avoid losing any pieces and allow you to focus on your work.
- Most importantly, if your computer has any warrantee or coverage by the manufacturer, this is often voided if the case is opened or tampered with. Before customizing any computer, ensure you are familiar with the terms of any such agreements you may have and understand the risks involved in performing the task.
If you wish to customize the appearance of your PC, there are many options available to help your rig stand out from the rest.
- Cold Cathode Case Lights -These small tube-shaped lights, powered by your computer's power supply, can add flair to a case or show off its inner workings. Available in nearly any color, these lights generate very little heat and are very light. This makes them ideal for placement inside a computer case, where they are easily mountable with small adhesive strips to achieve the desired effect.
- 5.25" Bay Accessories - Made to fit in an empty disc drive bay, these accessories range from temperature read-outs and fan controllers to more obscure things like cup holders and ashtrays. These can be easily installed by removing the side of your case and securing them in the bay, using the small screws included with the case to secure it in place, much like an optical drive.
- Custom Fan Grills - Most gaming computers will come with a number of fans used to cool the internal components. After measuring the size of your fan, these decorative grills just attach using the same screws that hold the fan in place.
