How to Dance in College
Whether you are just beginning as a dancer, or have danced for years, there are a number of colleges that offer you the option to continue at their institution. Some of the major colleges even offer options to major in dance as a part of the academic curriculum.
- Research the schools that offer dance as a major. Many schools in New York exist, such as a number of CUNY schools. Although this is the case, choose a location that you are willing to move to, or somewhere close to home, so you do not have to move anywhere.
- Apply to the school, or schools, of choice and wait for your acceptance letter. When applying, you must submit an application fee along with a completed application, as well as any credentials that are relevant to the school or program you are interested in. Make sure to include any letters of recommendation you can get your hands on from dance instructors or other professionals related to dance that you have worked with in the past.
- Choose your major in dance, once you have been accepted to the college. If the school offers you a subspecialty, such as ballet, jazz or modern, choose the one that interests you the most. Some schools also offer you the option to study general dance.
- Join a club specifically for dance that is offered at the college. This expands your options to dance and provides you with additional experience in your major. You have the insider information on dance-related events in the area, as well as the ability to audition to local performing arts studios and productions.
