How to Deal With a Bite From a Stray Animal

Some animals can be cute and friendly, but you never know when one could suddenly turn on you. If you are approached by a stray animal and then suddenly bitten there are certain steps you need to take. These steps are to ensure your safety. Here is how to deal with a bite from a stray animal.

  1. Do not approach the animal. Try to get far away from the animal as possible, this is to avoid another bite. Try to take note of what type of animal did the biting.

  2. Locate a clean towel or cloth and apply pressure to the area that was bitten. This is to stop the bleeding, if at all possible wash the area with warm soap and water.

  3. If you have a sterile bandage wrap the area, and then elevate the area above the heart. Doing this will keep the swelling down, and help stop the bleeding.

  4. Get to your doctor as soon as possible. Your doctor may want to know when was your last tetanus shot. Depending upon what type of animal that did the biting you may not have to worry about being exposed to rabies. Your physician may prescribe antibiotics, make sure you take all of your medication, and keep any follow up visits.
