How to Decide When to Paint Walls

The condition of the walls within your home affects the overall look of your decor. Even if you add elegant furniture and pristine artwork you're room could still appear unfinished and thrown together. By painting the walls of your home you could transform mediocre into fabulous.

  • Move your artwork to determine if your paint has faded. Sections of your walls in which artwork has covered for long periods of time will remain the original shade of the paint. If the paint on the wall has become dull consider painting your walls.

  • Examine your walls for brown and/or yellowing. Often the tar and nicotine from cigarettes produce stains on walls especially on walls that are white or light colors. Attempt to clean these walls with bleach and hot water before you decide to paint them. If this cleaning attempt is unsuccessful then it is time to paint the walls. Realize however if you smoke indoors that it is necessary to clean your walls in order to avoid stains in the future.

  • Redecorate your living spaces. Anytime you redecorate your living space you should consider painting your walls. You want the painted walls to match the colors used in your interior design.

  • Repair holes and cracks in your drywall. Anytime that you repair drywall you should paint the area that is repaired as well as the surrounding wall. By doing this the paint will match all over the entire wall instead of appearing patchy and unfinished. If it is not possible to paint the wall the same color as it was prior to the repair you should also consider painting the entire room a different color.
