How to Decorate Patio Umbrellas
Patio umbrellas provide needed relief from the sun's harsh rays. They help keep you cool on hot summer days. Why not give a little pizzazz to your patio umbrella and decorate it by using stencils or lighting. Decorating a patio umbrella is an easy process and fun project.
Decorating a Patio Umbrella Using Stencil
- Purchase a stencil design you like. Stencils can be found at most hobby stores.
- Remove the umbrella from the shaft.
- Clean the umbrella with soap and water. Scrub using a scrub brush and let dry.
- Place a drop cloth under the umbrella.
- Secure the stencils to the umbrella using masking tape.
- Spray paint the stencil designs using complimenting colors to match the umbrella.
- Let the first paint coat dry then apply another coat of paint to ensure the colors are vivid.
- Apply a sealant to the top of the umbrella.. A sealant will protect the umbrella from the elements and prevent color fading.
- Keep the umbrella in a shaded area for at least two days.
- Reattach the umbrella to the shaft.
Decorate the Umbrella with Lights
- Choose the type of lighting that matches the theme of your backyard or umbrella. Be sure the lights are safe for outdoor use. Miniature holiday lights work very well or choose themed lights such as; fish, oriental lanterns, peppers and etc.
- Run an extension cord up the shaft of the umbrella.
- Secure the extension cord.
- Run the lights along the outer rim of the umbrella and along each support.
- Secure the lights with zip ties making sure they are tight against the umbrella or supports. This will give the decorative lighting a straight line and professional appearance.
