How to Deodorize a Garbage Dumpster
Cleaning a dumpster is a necessary chore for those who use them. If you do not clean them out properly, it can be a health risk for your employees. If your dumpster has an unusual smell that won’t go away, you will need to both clean and deodorize it.
Items you’ll need:
- Bleach
- Degreaser
- Hose
- Nozzle
- Gloves
- Scrub brush with handle
- Remove all trash from the dumpster. It is best to wait for the dump truck to do this instead of doing it yourself.
- Unplug the drain of the dumpster and spray the interior and exterior of the dumpster down. Allow the water and bits of trash to flow out of the dumpster.
- Plug the drain back up and fill the dumpster with about six inches to a foot of water. Add the desired amount of bleach to the water.
- Put on your gloves and use the scrub brush to scrub both the interior and exterior of the dumpster. Once this step is completed, unplug the drain and let the bleach water flow out to the ground.
- Repeat steps three and four once again, this time using the degreaser instead of the bleach. Follow the instructions on the bottle to make sure that it is diluted properly. This step should give the dumpster a fresher smell.
- Rinse the dumpster out with the hose with the drain unplugged. Once the dumpster is completely dry, plug the bottom up for the final time and it will be ready for use once again.
