How to Design Garage Cabinets

If you're garage is a cluttered mess and lacks organization, you may want to consider installing garage cabinets. Garage cabinets create an easily accessible space for all the items inside your garage to be neatly placed. Purchasing these cabinets at your local home improvement store can be expensive so it's helpful to design your space first.

What You'll Need:

  • Measuring tape

  • Chalk or masking tape

  1. Remove everything from your garage and clean it out. You will not be able to accurately determine the amount of space you need if you can't clearly see what you need to store and the amount of space you have to do so. You can remove some of the unnecessary clutter at the same time by creating a trash pile.

  2. Categorize all the items you removed such as automotive, tools, sporting goods, garden and holiday decorations. It's best to have a separate cabinet for each category.

  3. Measure the amount of space you have to install your cabinets. When figuring this amount don't forget to consider vehicle storage and the amount of space you'll need in order to freely move about the garage. Pull your vehicle into the garage and use chalk to create a perimeter of the space where you will install the cabinets. Use measuring tape to measure the area.

  4. Visit your local home improvement store and determine the type of cabinets that work best for your space, usage and budget. You can select from prefabricated cabinets including floor cabinets, wall-mounted cabinets or wire-frame baskets. If you are unable to find something you like you can also build your own set of garage cabinets.
