Designing Fashion
- Keep a drawing pad on hand to practice drawing fashion designs as they come to you.
- Find pictures of models in magazines, and use tracing paper to trace the outline of these models. This will give you an outline to sketch your designs on.
- Cut out the figures from the tracing paper and glue them inside a sketch pad.
- Sketch your different fashion designs onto the figures.
- Focus on different styles, and play around with different necklines and sleeves. Different necklines to try include v-neck, round and scoop. Tops and dresses may be sleeveless or strapless, fitted or flowing. You may wish to try different sleeves, including bell, short, long or elbow length.
- Sketch your designs for skirts onto the fashion figure. Different skirt styles include A-line, pleated, pencil, column, mini or long.
- Sketch pants or shorts onto the fashion figures.
- Use colored pencils to add designs, embellishments and details to your fashion sketches. This may include buttons, zippers, ruffles, ribbons or belts.
- Choose your fabric for the fashion sketches.
- Attach a small piece of fabric next to the appropriate fashion sketch in your sketch book.
- Sign your work, and create a portfolio to carry with you.
- Approach different retailers, stores and garment shops to see if there is an interest in your designs.
