How to Design Your Own Computer Furniture
One way to set up the ideal home office is to design your own computer furniture. Doing so makes it easy to adapt each piece to create a workspace that is efficient, comfortable, and attractive. As part of the design effort, pay close attention to the size of the space, the scale and function for each piece of furniture, and how all the pieces will come together to create the look and feel you want.
- Measure the space. Before designing any computer furniture such as a desk or a cabinet to hold accessories, make sure you know how much floor space you have to work with. When measuring, make note of door and window placement, ceiling height, and the amount of floor space.
- Consider the layout for the room. Sketch out a rough draft of where to place desks and other work surfaces, where to include storage cabinets for software and various components, and even where seating for visitors will be allowed. Make sure to allow for the placement of lighting within the space so it is both functional and serves to create the right mood.
- Think in terms of what you need in the way of function for each piece of computer furniture. Decide if need desktop shelving as well as a flat desktop as a workspace, whether or not you need a file drawer in the desk, and even if you need drawers or other features to make the furniture ideal for the functions you have in mind. Identifying the functions will make it easier to come up with the right design.
- Combine what you’ve determined as far as scale, size and functionality into a basic design. This can be accomplished easily even if you don’t have any type of design experience. By using a good quality software program, it is possible to enter all the data into the program then generate several designs that meet your basic criteria. Those designs can then be adapted to allow for any other thoughts that come to mind as you view the graphics generated by the program.
