How to Design a Built-In Cabinet Room Divider
A well-made room divider will look great in your home’s entryway or if you have an over-size room therein. The divider will act as a wall, providing you with privacy and storage where you can hide your books or clutter.
Things That You Will Need
- A measuring tape
- Some graph paper
- A sketchpad
- A pencil
- Some colored pencils
- Measure how much floor space is available and how high your divider can be. Remember to leave open space at the top so that you don’t block light from entering.
- Draw your cabinet dimensions in relation to your room's architecture and furnishings on a piece of graph paper.
- Choose the materials that you want to use in making your divider. Make sure that the materials you choose are high quality. Consider creating doors for the cabinet unit. If you are going to use sliding doors, you will need to get a cabinet plan so that you can understand how tracking works and how to build it.
- Use colored pencils to sketch the room and its colors.
- Choose the appropriate cabinet finish (i.e. high-gloss white paint, dark cherry stain). It should match your room.
- Figure out how to utilize the cabinet’s interior space. Decide if you want room for wine glasses, somewhere to store your paperwork or small baskets and bins to use.
- Decide how you will secure the bottom of the cabinet. One idea is to construct the bottom framework out of double layers of 1/2-inch plywood or you can use anchor bolts.
