How to Design a Corner Kitchen Cabinet

A corner kitchen cabinet is a great addition to your kitchen, and it uses space in your kitchen that would otherwise be wasted. The enjoyment of planning your own cabinet is the freedom to express your design ideas. Half of the battle of making and creating plans for your own cabinets is designing the front, or the door of the cabinets.

Tools:

  • Pencil and paper

  • Tape Measure

  1. Take measurements of the area that the corner cabinet will occupy.  Be sure to measure the depth from where the door will be to the back side corner of the cabinet.  Measure the sides of the cabinet's depth, width and height, and measure the space available for the door.

  2. Research software online that is specifically used to create cabinet design plans, and note that some of the programs are free.  The programs allow you to specify and enter the dimensions that you have, you can enter the types of wood you are using, and you can choose the colors allowing you to visualize what your finished project will look like.  The program will create a list of the dimensions of wood you will need to complete the cabinet.

  3. Visit a woodworking store, like Rockler, to get ideas about how to make a custom door that will be the main thing that people will see when they look at your kitchen.

  4. Include functional ideas like installing a lazy Susan inside one or all of the shelves inside the cabinet so that goods or dishes are easily found on the spinning platform.

  5. When beginning making this project, it is helpful to paint or varnish all of the pieces of wood after cutting and sanding them, but before construction.  Although the entire cabinet may need to be varnished or painted again when assembled, it is always easier to paint your project before assembly.  Include this in your design step for creating your own cabinet.
