How to Design a Rose Garden

Designing a rose garden will be an enjoyable experience as you imagine your stately rose garden in detail or perhaps the wild cottage design is more to your liking. Climbing roses, shrub roses, hybrids, tea roses and miniature roses offer quite a few choices when designing your own rose garden. Space, soil and climate conditions may pose a challenge, but there are no limitations on your creativity.

  • Find the perfect planting location. Look for the size of area you desire for a rose garden. A rose garden needs sufficient sunlight for a minimum of six or more hours of sun. Ideal conditions are morning sun. Quality soil with good structure that drains well is another requirement. Allow enough space in your design that plants are not too close to a structure or other plants nearby that would compete for nutrients and root space. Do not overlook access to water and consider including a watering system within your rose garden design.

  • Design a traditional formal rose garden if you prefer the symmetrical look. These neat and manicured gardens are laid out in a rectangle or square. Traditional rose gardens are enclosed with paving stones, railroad ties, retaining walls or sod to section off the garden from surrounding landscape plants. Place tree roses in each of the four corners with hybrids and shrub roses in the middle. The best artistic look is created by planting roses by colors in groups. Plant cool shades of yellows and whites together or warmer shades of pinks and reds as a group. Always allow plenty of room for future growth between plants.

  • Use your imagination and creativity when designing the cottage rose garden. The cottage rose garden does not appear to have any structure at all. That is the beauty of it. Plant your favorite roses and the only rule is that each and everyone have the space to grow and be properly admired. Intersperse ground covers, flowers, logs and stones among the roses for a carefree rose garden filled with beauty.
