How to Design a Shoe Storage
Shoe storage is always welcomed, whether it is in the bedroom of a wonderful master bedroom, or a chic metropolitan loft with no walk-in closet space. Designing shoe storage is a simple task and will keep your favorite shoes in great shape for years to come.
- Count the number of shoes that will be stored. Measure the width of different types of shoes, noting average shoe widths. More bulky items such as tall boots and galoshes can be kept in the bottom of the hallway closet.
- Buy a sheet of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) large enough to support all the shoes on display. Choose a fiberboard that is thick and wide enough to handle the weight of a wide towel bar.
- Go to the local hardware store and select towel bars. The towel bars will need to be as wide as the medium-density fiberboard.
- Prepare the MDF sheet by painting it with several coats of white high gloss interior paint. The white high gloss interior paint is great for clean up and is easy to wipe down.
- Build the shoe storage. Measure the space between the rows on the MDF and make sure that you leave enough space to maneuver the shoes. The spacing goes back to step one with the average widths of the shoe types. Attach the towel bars horizontally on the MDF with the painted side up.
- Mark the spot for the towel bar to connect to the board with a pencil. Level the line of marks using a carpenter’s level. Drill a hole at each towel bar marker. Attach the towel bars to the MDF using nuts and bolts. Repeat the process for each marker.
- Stand the feature up to lean against the wall, mount it on the wall, or behind the door and insert shoes.
