How to Design a Wooden Shoe Rack
For those with many shoes but minimum space, a shoe rack is a great way to clear up space and organize your shoes. You can purchase a shoe rack, but if you have some do-it-yourself knowledge and can use a few simple tools, then you can make your own wooden shoe rack for much less money.
- Gather your supplies. You will need two four foot long boards, preferably 1x4 inches. You will also need a circular saw, wood screws, an eight-foot plank, finishing nails and a hammer.
- Cut the boards into four 40-inch long pieces and two 30-inch long pieces. If you do not have a circular saw, you can try askingthe lumber yard or building supply store you purchased your wood at if they can cut it for you.
- Use wood screws to attach one board of each sizeso that form an L-shape, with the 30-inch long piece on the bottom. Attach a second 40-inch board on the other end of the bottom board, parallel to the first 40-inch board. The two boards should be about 24 inches apart, leaving alittle lip on one side.
- Repeat the steps to make a mirror image of the assembly. These will be the outsides of the shoe rack.
- Cut three 1x12 planks that are 30 inches long. These are going to be the shelves.
- Use finishing nails to nail the shelves in place. Create a shelf every 18 inches. Make the rear of the shelf two inches higher than the front so that the boards are at a diagonal. Each board will extend a little further past the vertical stabilizing boards, and should line up with your bottom board.
- Add a trim to each of the shelves. Use a thin piece of wood, such as a quarter round trim, to the front ledge of each shelf. This will ensure that your shoes will stay on the shelf. Secure the trim with finishing nails.
