Materials Needed

  • Compressed air

  • Plastic baggies

  • Tape

  • Simple Green

  • Clean cloths

  • Brush with soft bristles

  • Garden hose

  • Engine protectant

  1. Prepare the engine for cleaning. Take a can of compressed air and blow the engine to remove any loose dirt and debris.

  2. Use plastic baggies with tape to cover any electrical components such as sensors and spark plugs. The baggies will prevent the liquids from shorting out the electrical components. The tape will keep the baggies in place.

  3. Turn on the engine allow it to warm up. This will help the degreaser work faster. Spray the engine with Simple Green. This degreaser will help dissolve any grease on the engine. Allow the degreaser to sit on the engine for five minutes. Use a clean cloth to remove the degreaser from any painted areas on the car such as the bumper and hood.

  4. Scrub hard to reach areas with a brush that has soft bristles. Use the brush to remove any accumulation of grease or dirt.

  5. Turn on the garden hose and rinse the engine. Try to not to use pressure when rinsing the engine and use care around the baggies. Use plenty of water to make sure the degreaser is completely removed.

  6. Allow the engine to dry for one hour. Use a clean cloth to further dry the engine. Take the baggies and tape from the electrical parts. Turn on the engine and allow the heat to dry the engine for about five minutes. Once the engine is cool, spray the engine a coat of protectant.
