How to Detail a Car for a Car Show

If you plan to show your car at a car show, you will want it cleaned, detailed and at its best. You will have to be sure that your car sparkles, inside, outside and even underneath.  You will want to work on detailing your car as close to the day of the show as possible.

Materials needed:

  • Car washing soap

  • Bucket

  • Sponges

  • High gloss car polish

  • Tire cleaner

  • Tire shine

  • Chrome polisher

  • Window cleaner

  • Vacuum

  • Carpet shampooer

  • Upholstery cleaner

  • Cleaning cloths

  • Towels

  • Hose

  • Engine detailing mitt

  • Engine degreaser

  1. Clean the outside of your car with soap and water. Wash the body first, including windows. Spray the entire car with the hose to remove dirt and debris that may scratch the car. Be sure to get the tires and tire wells, as well as under the car to remove any loose dirt or mud. Dry the car with soft towels after washing.

  2. Make your car shine by using a high gloss car polish. Polish your rims and any chrome on your car with chrome polish. You do not want to have any smudges or streaks on the chrome. Spray tire shine on your tires.

  3. Clean your windows, headlights and back lights with Windex or other window cleaner.

  4. Dust and vacuum the inside of your car. Take the mats out so you can vacuum the carpet.

  5. Use a carpet shampooer on the carpet and an upholstery cleaner to clean upholstery, if you have any.

  6. Use cleaner or a damp cloth to wipe the steering wheel and column, the dash board, the door frame and any pockets of holders you have.

  7. Empty out any items that you have in your trunk. You want your trunk to be clean and empty. Vacuum the trunk once it is emptied out.

  8. Rinse your car's engine to get as much gunk off as you can. Using an engine cleaning mitt, clean the engine by hand to get it cleaner. You may need to use degreaser on some areas. Rinse the engine again once you are done with your hand cleaning.

  9. Remember that every bit of your car will be looked at by the judges. No area should be overlooked when getting your car ready for the car show.
