How to Determine Which Video Driver I Have
Video cards can offer a substantial boost in the performance of your computer. Keeping the drivers for your video card up to date will ensure that it runs at the peak of its abilities. With the wide assortment of video cards available, determining your video card model and driver version can help to make sure the driver update process goes smoothly.
- Power on your computer.
- Open the “Run” window. Depending on your version of Windows, this can be found directly on the Start Menu or by clicking “All Programs” followed by “Accessories.”
- Type “dxdiag.exe” into the text entry field next to “Open.”
- Click “OK.” This will launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
- Click the tab labeled “Display 1” at the top of the window.
- Find the “Name:” listing in the “Device” section on the left side of the window. This is the model number of your video card.
- Find the “Manufacturer:” listing in the “Device” section on the left side of the window.
- Find the “Version:” listing in the “Drivers” section on the right side of the window. The number should directly correlate with the driver listings available on the manufacturer's website.
- Click “Display 2” at the top of the window, if you have a second video card, and repeat steps six through nine to obtain video driver information for your secondary card.
If you have a complicated video card setup or wish to save a copy of the information you gathered to a text file, clicking "Save All Information" at the bottom of the window will open a prompt asking you to choose a location. Clicking "Save" will save a text file to your chosen location that includes all the information the DirectX Diagnostic Tool has gathered.
