How to Develop a Charter School Curriculum
Charter schools are created to meet a specific community's needs. Sometimes these needs can be quite diverse. Nevertheless they must be taken into consideration. By doing so conducting some additional planning and holding meetings with parents you can develop a successful charter school curriculum.
- Meet with the charter school's founding members in order to decide upon what teaching philosophy will be used. These channels of communication must be opened up early on in the process and then be kept open until the process is complete.
- Decide whether your focus will be upon the sciences or on liberal arts. Each of these both have advantages and disadvantages that you must think through.
- Establish goals that you want to see the curriculum meet. It is important to review these goals at regular intervals in order to ensure that it is working. Otherwise, there may be some confusion that will ensue amongst professors.
- Ask parents to provide you with feedback. Without parental involvement, your charter school is going to falter because it will be solely dependent upon community involvement, which can be difficult to get.
- Set up a relationship with the other charter schools that are located in your area. Hold regular meetings with these other charter schools in order to talk about what the most affective approach to curriculum has been for them. This will allow you to adapt your techniques whenever necessary so that you are sure that they will meet your specific set of requirements.
