How to Diagnose Prostatitis
If you are a man who is suddenly dealing with a variety of unusual symptoms, prostatitis may be to blame. There are a number of symptoms to look out for and things that you can do to help ensure that you get an accurate diagnosis of prostatitis.
- Recognize any unusual symptoms that appear, such as frequent and painful urination, pain in the groin or pain in the lower back. These symptoms may also be accompanied by fever and chills.
- Write down all of your symptoms and keep track of how often they occur.
- Schedule an appointment with your health care provider to get an accurate diagnosis. If the pain is severe or you are experiencing a high fever, you may need to go to the emergency room.
- Fill out any forms that are given to you by your doctor. These forms may ask for information on your medical history, as well as all of the symptoms you are experiencing.
- Have any necessary tests done to get an accurate diagnosis. The doctor will most likely perform a DRE, or digital rectal exam, to examine the prostate and determine whether there is any inflammation or tenderness. The doctor may also do an urinalysis to check for the presence of infection and a cystoscopy. A cystoscopy may be done to rule out the possibility of anything other than prostatitis causing the symptoms you are experiencing.
- Discuss the various treatment methods for prostatitis. Treatment may include a prescription for antibiotics and pain relievers. You may also be instructed to avoid certain activities, as well as caffeine, alcohol and spicy foods, which could make the condition worse.
