How to Disconnect Molex Connectors

Molex is a company that manufactures a variety of electronic connectors that are most often used in personal computers. These connectors are known collectively as Molex connectors. Some of these connectors can be disconnected by hand, while others require a tool.

Items Needed:

  • Slotted screwdriver

  • Molex extractor tool

  1. Disconnect quick-connect Molex connectors. Hold the socket in place with one hand. Hold the plug with the other hand, and pull the plug directly away from its socket. You should need to apply only moderate force to disconnect this type of Molex connector.

  2. Disconnect Molex connectors with clips. Push the lever on the plug down so that it clears the stud on the socket. Pull the plug away from the socket while holding the lever down.

  3. Disconnect Molex connectors with a screwdriver. Release the clip by inserting a small slotted screwdriver under the clip and twisting the screwdriver. Pull the plug away from the socket to detach the Molex connector.

  4. Disconnect a Molex connector with an extraction tool. These connectors have a housing that contains a terminal pin that must be released before detaching the plug. Align the small end of the extraction tool with the socket that contains the terminal pin. Insert the small end of the tool directly into the socket to engage the locking tabs inside the connector housing. Twist the extractor tool counterclockwise while depressing the locking tabs to release the terminal pin. Detach the plug from the socket as usual to disconnect this type of Molex connector.
