How to Dispose of Old Cosmetics

There are many ways to dispose of old cosmetics that need to be discarded. Some cosmetics may contain chemicals that can be very harmful to the environment, so be very careful and pay attention to the ingredients on the container when discarding old cosmetic items.

There are a few ways to dispose of old cosmetics. Most makeup items can be reused for other activities such as painting or art creations. Many people are tempted to get rid of their toiletries by either pouring the contents down the drain or flushing it down the toilet, but those options are not so great for the environment. In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency claims that products such as nail polish and nail polish remover can contaminate the water and earth. A few alternative options are:

Option 1: Contact your local solid waste organization to inquire about discarding cosmetics.

Option 2: Empty all toiletries into a single container, and place all the bottles that are recyclable into a bin.

Option 3: Find out whether there are any cosmetic companies that accept old cosmetics. If any of the options listed above don't work then try to discard all of old cosmetics into one bag, instead of multiple. It may not be the most suitable option, but it is a way do decrease carbon footprints.
