How to Divide and Transplant Daylilies
Daylilies are one of the easiest perennials to take care of. They can be a colorful addition to your outdoor landscape, as they come in a variety of colors. It should be noted that daylilies spread frequently and will need to be divided and transplanted once every couple of years.
- Conduct your separation in the fall. This will provide the daylilies with the best growth chances for the upcoming spring season. It will also promote a more fruitful bloom. You may choose to place your extra plants elsewhere in your garden or give them to family and friends. The plants will need to be divided at least every two years or when their flowering slows down.
- Trim your foliage in advance. Cut it about half way down before you start digging the daylilies up. This will allow you more visibility for separation.
- Dig up the daylily. Maneuver underneath and then raise it up out of the dirt with one swift motion. Be sure to remove as much soil from it as possible.
- Locate the new growth. This is usually found near the crown of the plant. Once you locate it, pull them apart gently using a screwdriver. Make sure to keep the root system intact.
- Replant the daylilies. Choose an area with lots of direct sunlight. The hole that you dig needs to be big enough to allow the roots to spread. Plant the daylilies at least 10 inches away from each other. Cover the crown with top soil and water during mid-afternoon for best results.
