How to Do Auto Repair at Home
While many people think that you need a large shop to work on a car, nothing could be further from the truth. The term "shade-tree mechanic" springs from the idea of the do-it-yourself that has parked his or her car outdoors and opened up the hood in order to repair the problem themselves.
Things You'll Need
- Cardboard box
- Automobile ramps
- Wood block
- Automobile tools
- Automotive repair manual
Instructions:
- Stock up your toolbox with a variety of tools. Many hardware stores carry ready-stocked toolbox kits with everything you need from open-ended wrenches to socket sets.
- Obtain a copy of a automobile book/guide specifically for the model and make of your vehicle. Do this just before opening up the hood of your car to start repairing it.
- Consider using some automobile ramps as well as some wood blocks or other tire wedges to keep your vehicle from rolling backward when raising the vehicle. Many home mechanics will use automobile jacks or blocks to raise the level of their vehicle so that they can work more easily on it.
- Remember to always think safety first. While fixing or repairing any vehicle always poses a danger: Heavy machinery, electrical currents, moving parts including belts and fans, different bolts, heated metal and different fluids and power tools. Always remember to use safety goggles and gloves when repairing your vehicle.
- Keep yourself and your driveway clean by laying a piece of cardboard scrap down underneath your engine. The cardboard will catch any drips and spills as well as keeping you from lying directly on the ground.
