How to Do Hairspray Hairstyles

Hairspray is designed to help hold hairstyles in place. There are a variety of different hairspray formulas available for all types of hair and most types of hairstyles. The type of hairspray, the way you use it and amount you use will depend on your hairstyle.

  • Choose the type and strength of hairspray that you need. If you are wearing your hair down and plan to be outside, you may want to choose a hairspray that is frizz-free or humidity resistant. If you are wearing an updos for a special even that will last all night, you will want a strong spray that can last for many hours. There are several types of hair sprays to choose from and each one is designed to serve and special purpose and hold specific hairstyles.

  • Use hairspray before styling the hair to make the hair more manageable and help it hold curls or styles better. Spray the hair lightly to avoid weighing it down.

  • Spray individual sections of hair to hold curls or waves better. Spray the hair before you curl it and again afterwards. Part the hair, hold the section in you hand and spray about 3 inches away from the hair. Start towards the scalp and work your way down the end of the hair. Once you have curled all of he hair, spray the entire head to hold the style in place.

  • Style updos or straight hair and spray with hair spray to hold the style. Updos should be sprayed around the top, back and sides of the head to control fly-a-ways and frizz. Spray the styled portion of hair to maintain the style. Spray straight hair away from the scalp, concentrating on the middle and ends of the hair. Spraying the scalp may cause hairspray residue to show up or may make the scalp itch.
