How to Do Home Repairs on a Tight Budget
Repairing a home on a tight budget may take the homeowner longer, but the savings can add up. Asking friends to help is one way to save on the repairs. If the homeowner needs to hire a professional for certain repairs, getting bids from several different contractors can help to drive down the price of the job.
- Decide the order of the repairs you need to make on your home. Make a list of all of the materials that you need to buy. Since you are on a tight budget, try to do most of the repair work yourself to save some money.
- Buy the cheapest materials you can find. For example, if you need to do some woodwork, cut the wood yourself instead of buying it in pieces. Search at several different stores to buy the things you need to find the lowest price. You can also wait for sales promotions to help save some money on the cost of the materials.
- Plan to do the repairs a little each month. Work down your list and only start one repair project at a time. For example, if you need to paint the interior and exterior of your house, paint the exterior first. Once you finish with the outside, start to paint the inside of the house.
- Ask your friends to help you with the repairs to save on labor costs. You may eventually have to hire a professional to make some of the repairs, but try to get as much free help as you can. Work on the same repair project with your friends instead of leaving them to work on it by themselves so you can complete it faster.
- Shop around to find the cheapest contractor if you cannot complete a repair by yourself. Get at least three estimates from different contractors for the repairs you need. Have them compete with each other to find the one that will give you the best price.
