Martial arts refers to a system of practices and traditions of combat. They are practiced for a variety of reasons which including self-defense, exercise, as well as mental and spiritual development. A form of martial arts, called tricking, focuses on the art of the movements associated with martial arts.

  • A type of gymnastics called tricking, short for martial arts tricking, is based on martial arts moves and techniques. Many people involved in this art have formal training in some branch of martial arts, however there is no formal tricking training. Many tricksters, as those involved in this sport are called, learn from their peers or are self-taught.

  • Those involved in the sport can participate in gatherings organized by others in the tricking community. Such events give tricksters the ability to learn various tricks and styles, as well as demonstrate their skills to others. Some tricksters may wish to perform individually while others perform as a team.

  • Many teams choreograph demos which they perform at events. Not only do the demos promote their teams, they also bring tricking out into the light for the rest of the world. At competitions, some trickers choose to pair up with other trickers and perform; for example, Steve Terada and Rudy Reynon competed together in a (musical) open form.

  • Tricking can be very entertaining to watch or perform. Contacting your local martial arts training academy can get you pointed in the right direction to learn this art. No matter how you learn, practice will always make perfect.
