Supplies needed:
- Electric saw
- Level
- Shims
- 1x4 lumber
- Screw gun and screws
- Hammer
- Nails
- Batt insulation
- Scissors
- Caulk
- Aluminum
- Drywall or trim (optional for interior)
- Cut out the current window with an electric saw or by cutting through the nailing flange that secures the window on the outside. If you cut the nailing flange you can avoid removing the exterior surface on the house. If the window is screwed in place you can remove by unscrewing.
- Use the level to make sure your window is evenly flushed. Also place the level on the bottom stud; if the stud is not level use shims and 1x4 lumbers to level off the surface.
- Use shims to create a snug fit of the window. Do not force the shims too tight; it can affect the window’s operation.
- Apply screws through the window’s frame to secure the window in place. Remove any access vinyl inserts and ensure that the top, bottom, and sides of the window are level.
- Cut small strips of batt insulation to fill any gaps between the window and studs. Use a shim to stuff the insulation into its place. Finish the interior with trim or drywall and seal the exterior with aluminum and caulk.
