How to Donate Kids Clothes
In many cases a child will outgrow their clothes long before they come close to wearing them out. Instead of throwing them away or cluttering up precious space by trying to keep them, parents can choose to donate them to a charity organization.
- Thoroughly wash all your children's clothing first. Mend clothes that have tears or missing buttons, if possible. Filter out items that cannot be mended, or those that have visible stains which cannot be removed. Those that are pristine and which can be donated should then be folded neatly, sorted by age and gender, then stored in marked shopping bags.
- Ask your friends, coworkers or members of your family if they need children's clothes. If they do not have children that your clothes can fit, then perhaps they may know someone else whose children would benefit from the donation.
- Take your clothes to local places of worship. These include churches, mosques, synagogues or temples that exist in your community.
- Donate your used children's clothes to a charitable organization. The Goodwill, Red Cross and the Salvation Army are good examples of charities that take children's clothes. You can find their office locations on their websites and in some cases they will come to your house to pick them up.
Tips
- Never donate used underwear. Most places will not accept them.
- Ask for a receipt from churches or charitable organizations if you wish to use it as a tax write-off. Store the receipt securely and file it with your tax return for the current year.
