How to Donate School Supplies

If you have extra school supplies at the end of the year or a stack of supplies that you have gently or never used, you may want to consider donating these supplies to someone who can use them.  School supplies can be an expensive burden on many families and educational centers.  Your donation will greatly help those in need and may even be tax deductible.

  1. Gather your school supplies and put them in a box or bag.  Make sure that the supplies are not dirty, broken or ragged looking.  Even though you are donating them, you may want to wipe off any dust or throw away items that cannot be used.

  2. Call a local donation center like Goodwill or Salvation Army.  You can also contact local public or private schools.  If these options do not work, try contacting a church or community organization.  School supplies are usually collected in these facilities and donated to a local school.

  3. Take your school supplies to the nearest facility.  You may need to check them in at a side or back entrance.  Donations are usually not accepted at the front door.  If you are going to a school, stop at the school office to donate your supplies.  Wherever you are donating, there will be someone who can guide you to the right spot.

  4. Leave your supplies with the appropriate personnel.  You may want to show a few of the items you have in your bag or box.

  5. Ask for a donation letter or receipt for tax purposes.  Local charities and schools provide standard donation forms that you fill in for the year’s tax return.
